River Blackwater Footbridge at Maghery, completed
30 December 2001
Friday 21st December 2001 saw the practical completion and opening to the public, of our Design and Construct £ 269,000 contract for a 53m span cycle/footbridge over the river Blackwater at Maghery, Co. Armagh. Craigavon Borough Council awarded this contract in early July 2001 for completion by the end of December 2001.
As the bridge had to receive TAS approval from DRDNI Roads Service, to faciliate possible future adoption, the six months contract period was taken up by two months of lead-in design followed by four months site work. Final TAS approval was received some four months into the contract.
The design included earth approach ramps built over reinforced concrete slabs on pre-cast piles. The ramps lead to reinforced concrete abutments also on piles; each with pre-cast concrete cantilever sections. The bridge centre section is a 40m span steel truss with timber deck. The contract also included stone revetments on both riverbanks, a car parking area and accommodation works.
Lead designers for the works were WDR&RT Taggart, with Allerton Bridges Ltd responsible, under subcontract to Deane Public Works, for the design, fabrication and installation of the steel bridge section together with the supply of steel side spans that sit on the cantilevers.Back
